You don't need a perfect speech, just a place to start. These are real words for real moments, built to open the conversation rather than shut it down.

How to Approach

Talking to our teens can feel scary. Will we get it right? Will we mess it up? In truth, we probably won't get it 100% right, and we may mess up a few times too. But here's the good news: we have more than one shot at this. The most important part isn't having all the answers, it's the relationship and the openness you create to talk at all.

First, take a breath

A Few Things You Don't Need to Worry About

You Don't Need to Be an Expert

Knowing a thing or two helps, but your real leverage is the trust you build and the openness to talk at all.

This Isn't Your Only Chance

These are many small conversations over time, not one high-stakes talk that has to go perfectly.

You Don't Need an Excuse to Start

Being the adult in your kid's life is reason enough. You don't have to wait for the perfect moment.

You Don't Need a Formal Plan

Some of the best conversations happen in the car, on a walk, or running errands, where there's less pressure.

What actually helps

Most of the Work Is Relational

Listen First

Lectures don't leave much room for conversation, but open questions do. It takes real intention to hold back your first reaction and just listen, but that's often where the real conversation begins.

Try opening with

"How are you feeling about...?"

"What have you heard about...?"

"Help me understand..."

Remember the Load They're Carrying

Substance use is part of a bigger picture that includes mental health, social pressure, and how they cope. "Drugs are bad for you" isn't prevention on its own.

Use the Moments Already Happening

When substances come up in the news or in your community, take the opening. Those moments are natural doors into honest conversation, though remember you never actually need an excuse.

How to Use the Tool Below
